Finnish architect Juhani Pallasmaa is widely known for his lectures, essays, and books that have become touchstones in discourse on human experience and architecture. His extended 1996 essay The Eyes of the Skin stands as a seminal critique of ocularcentrism and a compelling argument for the importance of sensory perception in design. Yet Pallasmaa’s legacy extends far beyond any single text: throughout his life, he has engaged scholars across disciplines—from neuroscience and entomology to poetics and film—continually centering questions of perception, solitude, and the relationship between the individual and the collective. Phenomena convenes an international group of speakers who build on Pallasmaa’s ideas in multiple contexts.
