Universal Design targets design solutions suitable for as many user groups as possible. They are easy to use so that there is no need for products, environments, programs or services for groups of people with special needs. Universal Design promotes equal opportunities to access activities of daily living. Universal Design can remove barriers and enhance inclusion in society. It allows people to use their whole potential and be active in their communities.

The first EU standard for Design for All (2019) specifies requirements that enable an organization to design, develop and provide products, goods and services so that they can be accessed, understood and used by the widest range of users, including persons with disabilities. It promotes Design for All approach in mainstream products goods and services and interoperability of these with assistive technologies.
