The UIA World Congress of Architects 2026 Barcelona is a unique international event for architectural dialogue, bringing together renowned architects, researchers, and leading figures from various disciplines. The Congress is convened by the International Union of Architects (UIA), a non-governmental organization uniting national associations of architects from over 100 countries and representing more than one million professionals worldwide. It is organized by the Higher Council of the Orders of Architects of Spain (CSCAE), a UIA member section, in collaboration with the Architects’ Association of Catalonia (COAC) in Barcelona, the host city.
Taking place every three years in a different city, in 2026, it will be held in Barcelona for the second time in its history (previously in 1996), making it the first city to host the Congress twice. UNESCO has designated it as the World Capital of Architecture 2026, in recognition of its nomination.
Becoming explores spatial practices that foster the appropriation and transformation of our inhabited environments —both human and more-than-human, individual and collective— by investigating the potential of time as a design tool. Rejecting the notion of tabula rasa, it is rooted in a deep awareness of pre-existing physical and cultural landscapes, curating transitions through material, political, ecological, and poetic interrelations.
