SAFA election results announced: Architects for Sustainable Construction gain nine seats, largest individual vote share won by Iida Kalakoski
The results of the SAFA Delegates Council election held in April/May 2025 have now been declared. The individual member to win the most votes was Iida Kalakoski from Tampere, while nearly 300 voters endorsed a group of candidates standing for election under the banner of Architects for Sustainable Construction, which entitles the group to nine Delegates Council seats. The turnout among full members was nearly 30%.
The SAFA Election Committee declared the results of the election on 13 May. The new 31-strong Delegate Council will serve from 2025 until 2029. It comprises 28 full members and 3 student members. Student members of SAFA were eligible to vote in their local constituency.
The electoral grouping to secure the most votes (291) was Architects for Sustainable Construction. This entitles the grouping to nine seats on the Delegates Council. Yrittäjä-SAFA, a grouping of business owner members, received the second-highest vote share with 152 votes, equating to a total of five seats. The third most popular grouping was Eko-Safa with 145 votes and four seats on the Delegates Council.
A new grouping to secure representation on the Delegates Council was Meidän Safa, with two seats.
The individual candidates to secure the most votes were Iida Kalakoski from Tampere with 49 votes, Timo Hintsanen from Turku with 40 votes and Riikka Kuittinen from Oulu with 36 votes.
The student member with the most votes was Roope Mustonen from Helsinki with 33 votes. The two other student candidates to secure seats on the Delegates Council are Camilla Heiskanen and Ilari Anttila from Tampere.
Largest election turnout since online voting introduced
A total of 971 full members cast a ballot in the Delegate Council election. This equates to a turnout of 32.1%, the highest since online voting was introduced in 2015. In the previous election, the turnout was 24.1%.
A total of 89 student members voted in the election, with a turnout of 12.1%, up from 11.9% in the previous election.
The 2025 Delegates Council election was the first time that prospective voters were able to make use of an online election tool allowing them to compare the candidates’ views on a series of issues. The election tool drew responses from 80 out of the 100 candidates standing for election.
The Delegates Council is SAFA’s highest decision-making body responsible for setting the organisation’s budget and strategic direction as well as rules and regulations. The Delegates Council also appoints SAFA’s Executive Board along with the Ethics Committee and Election Committee.
